TL;DR

Anthropic's certification program grew from one partner exam in March to four proctored exams in July 2026: Claude Certified Associate, Foundations ($99), Claude Certified Developer, Foundations ($125), Claude Certified Architect, Foundations ($125), and Claude Certified Architect, Professional ($175). All four run 120 minutes, pass at 720 on a 100 to 1,000 scale, are delivered by Pearson VUE online or at test centers, and stay valid for 12 months with a free on-time renewal. Registration runs through the Anthropic Partner Academy, which is tied to the Claude Partner Network; joining the network starts free at the Registered level. There are no mandatory prerequisites for any exam, and the best preparation is free: the exam guide blueprints plus the public Anthropic Academy courses.

Quick answer

What is a Claude certification, and which one fits you?

A Claude certification is a proctored, paid Anthropic exam, and there are now four of them. That is a different thing from the free course completion certificates you earn on Anthropic Academy. The certification exams are delivered by Pearson VUE, cost $99 to $175 per attempt, and report a pass or fail with a scaled score.

The short version of which exam fits: Associate for people who use Claude in business roles, Developer for people who ship applications on the API and Agent SDK, Architect Foundations for people who design production systems with Claude Code, MCP, and agents, and Architect Professional for experienced architects who own end-to-end delivery.

This program moved fast. Anthropic announced its first exam, Claude Certified Architect, Foundations, on March 12, 2026, alongside a $100 million partner investment. By the June 3 partner update, more than 10,000 consultants had earned a Claude certification. In July 2026 the program reached its current shape: four exams, version 1.0 exam guides for each, and delivery through Pearson VUE with both online proctoring and physical test centers.

The shared mechanics, straight from the guides: every exam is 120 minutes, uses multiple-choice and multiple-response items that state how many answers to pick, reports a pass or fail with a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, and shows your percent correct per domain on the score report. The cut score is 720 everywhere, set through a formal standard-setting study rather than a fixed percentage of correct answers. Pearson VUE's own program page confirms the lineup:

Pearson VUE's Claude Certification Program page showing the Anthropic program banner and the list of all four exams with their codes: CCAO-F, CCAR-F, CCAR-P, and CCDV-F

That screenshot also shows a naming quirk. Pearson's intro paragraph still describes the roles as Practitioner, Architect, and Developer, while the exam list right below it says Associate. The exam guides and the exam list carry the current naming; the word Practitioner appears nowhere in them.

Names and codes

Anthropic writes the names with the role and level, so Claude Certified Architect, Foundations and Claude Certified Architect, Professional are different exams. The codes are less confusing: CCAO-F, CCDV-F, CCAR-F, CCAR-P. Early coverage of the March launch often shortened the first exam to CCA-F, but the current official code is CCAR-F.

Who can actually register

The partner requirement is real, but the entry level is free.

Registration and checkout happen on the Anthropic Partner Academy, and Pearson VUE's program page says "Certification is open to organizations in the Claude Partner Network" and that passing counts toward partner program standing. So no, this is not an open public exam you can book the way you would book a cloud certification.

At the same time, the gate is lower than it sounds. Anthropic's June 2026 partner update says getting started with the Claude Partner Network is free, with new applicants starting at Registered, the entry level of the program. The same update makes a point of saying certifications belong to individual people, not firms. In practice that means the path for an individual is: your employer is already in the network, or you apply to the network, which costs nothing at the entry tier. The exam guides also note that the fee shown at checkout reflects any discount from your partner tier.

Anthropic Partner Academy landing page stating that Partner Academy differs from the public consumer academy and requires additional validation at login, with the four Partner Exclusive Certifications listed below

The Partner Academy landing page states the gate plainly: it differs from the public consumer academy and requires additional validation at login. The four exams sit right below that notice, labeled Partner Exclusive Certifications.

What this means if you are an individual developer

There is no consumer storefront where you type in a card number and book CCAR-F this afternoon. Access flows through a Partner Network organization. If you freelance or run your own consultancy, the network application itself is the free first step. If you just want proof of Claude skills without any of that, the free Academy completion certificates remain the no-friction option.

Claude Certified Associate, Foundations (CCAO-F)

The business-user exam: $99, 60 questions, seven domains.

The Associate exam validates that you can put Claude to work on real business tasks with minimal guidance. The guide aims it at people in operations, marketing, project management, education, and communications who build Claude Projects and structured workflows in their day-to-day roles. It explicitly says it is not intended for software developers who build against APIs; that scope belongs to the Developer and Architect exams. Here is the summary table from the official guide:

Exam Details at a Glance table from the official Claude Certified Associate Foundations exam guide: 60 items, 120 minutes, $99 USD fee, passing score of 720 on a 100 to 1,000 scale, 12-month validity

The single heaviest domain is evaluating and validating Claude's output, at 21 percent. Anthropic is testing whether you catch hallucinations and know when to verify before you ship an answer to a compliance team, which says a lot about what goes wrong in business use. The sample questions in the guide follow the same theme: verify the citation, match the model to the task, anonymize regulated data before uploading.

Claude Certified Developer, Foundations (CCDV-F)

The builder exam: $125, 53 questions, heavy on integration.

The Developer exam covers building, integrating, and shipping Claude applications: the API and client SDKs, the Claude Agent SDK, Claude Code, evals and debugging, and custom tools and MCP servers. The guide recommends 1 to 5 years of software engineering experience plus at least six months hands-on with Claude or comparable LLM systems, and expects working Python or TypeScript.

A third of the exam sits in one domain, Applications and Integration, which spans API mechanics, streaming, caching, batch versus realtime tradeoffs, schema design, and configuration management down to CLAUDE.md files and model version pinning. If you have shipped a production Claude integration, most of that list will feel familiar. If your experience is limited to prompting in the chat interface, this is the wrong first exam; take the Associate instead.

Claude Certified Architect, Foundations (CCAR-F)

The original exam, now scenario based: $125, 60 questions.

Take the Quiz

This is the exam Anthropic launched the program with in March. Its current form is the most distinctive of the four: every question hangs off a realistic production scenario, and each sitting presents 4 scenarios drawn at random from a published bank of 6. The official guide's summary table shows the structure:

Exam Details at a Glance table from the official Claude Certified Architect Foundations exam guide: 60 items, 4 scenarios drawn from a bank of 6, 120 minutes, $125 USD fee, passing score of 720

The scenarios are worth knowing before you book, because they tell you exactly what Anthropic thinks a Claude architect does all day.

The six CCAR-F scenario contexts

  1. 1A customer support resolution agent built on the Agent SDK with MCP tools and an escalation path
  2. 2Claude Code for team code generation, with slash commands, CLAUDE.md configuration, and plan mode decisions
  3. 3A multi-agent research system where a coordinator delegates to search, analysis, synthesis, and report subagents
  4. 4Developer productivity tooling using built-in tools like Read, Write, Bash, Grep, and Glob plus MCP servers
  5. 5Claude Code wired into a CI/CD pipeline for automated review, test generation, and PR feedback
  6. 6A structured data extraction system validating output against JSON schemas

The guide recommends 6 or more months of practical experience across the Claude API, Agent SDK, Claude Code, and MCP. Its 39 pages make it by far the most detailed of the four guides, with task statements and sample questions per scenario, so read it in full even if you skip every other prep resource.

Claude Certified Architect, Professional (CCAR-P)

The senior exam: $175, 63 questions, the widest scope.

Architect Professional extends the architect track to full production ownership: solution design, RAG pipelines, integration mechanics, evaluation frameworks, governance, and the stakeholder side of the job. The recommended profile is 3 or more years in systems architecture or platform engineering plus six months of Claude or comparable LLM systems in production.

Source: CCAR-P Exam Guide, Version 1.0, July 2026

Note the 14 percent on stakeholder communication and lifecycle management. This is the only exam of the four that grades you on the consulting half of the role, which fits its position as the credential Anthropic's services partners will care about most. Nothing in the guide requires you to hold Architect Foundations first; each exam stands alone.

How to register, step by step

Partner Academy handles checkout, Pearson VUE handles the exam.

The registration flow from the official guides

  1. 1Open the certification page for your exam on the Anthropic Partner Academy and review the details
  2. 2Download the exam guide and read the certification terms and exam policy before paying
  3. 3Register and complete checkout; partner-tier discounts apply automatically at this step
  4. 4Follow the confirmation instructions to create your Pearson VUE account
  5. 5Schedule a session: online proctored from home or a Pearson VUE test center
  6. 6Cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before the appointment; inside 24 hours you forfeit the fee

On exam day you need a valid, unexpired government photo ID that exactly matches the name on your registration. Name mismatches have to be fixed with Anthropic's certification support before you schedule, so check that early if your documents differ from your registration name.

Proctoring, retakes, and the fine print

Four attempts a year, with growing wait times between them.

These are proctored, closed-book exams under a non-disclosure agreement you accept before the first question. Online candidates stay on webcam the whole session with a clear workspace, and the prohibited list covers notes, phones, smart watches, headphones, and second monitors. Declining the NDA ends the session without a refund, and disclosing exam content afterward can void your result and ban you from future exams.

  • Retakes: after a fail you wait 14 days, then 30 after a second fail, then 90 after a third. Four attempts maximum in a rolling 12-month window, counted per exam, and each attempt costs the full fee.
  • Per-exam limits: failing one exam does not lock you out of registering for a different one.
  • No-shows: missing your slot or arriving late forfeits the fee entirely.
  • Accommodations: available for documented needs, but Pearson VUE must approve the request before you schedule, so file it first.
  • Appeals: you have 14 days from a decision or from your exam date to appeal through Pearson VUE support. Exam content and the passing standard itself are not appealable.

Validity and renewal: the 12-month clock

Short validity, but on-time renewal costs nothing.

Every Claude credential expires 12 months after it is awarded. That is short next to the two or three year windows common in cloud certifications, and Anthropic's guides are open about why: the platform changes too fast for a three-year-old credential to mean much.

The renewal terms soften it considerably. Renewing on time means reviewing what changed since you certified and passing a free, non-proctored assessment on the Partner Academy, with no fee and no test center visit. Let it lapse, though, and the only way back is the full proctored exam at the full price. The guides also reserve the right to require a full retake instead of the light renewal when exam content changes enough, which given the last twelve months of model releases is not a theoretical clause.

How to prepare without paying for anything

The blueprint, the free courses, and the docs cover it.

No exam has a mandatory course, and Anthropic sells no prep bundle. The official guides say to study the blueprint, use the documentation, and build real things. Three free resources cover nearly all of it:

  • The exam guides themselves. Each one is a free PDF with the full domain blueprint, task statements, and official sample questions with answer rationale. The CCAR-F guide alone runs 39 pages and doubles as a study syllabus.
  • The public Anthropic Academy. The free catalog had 20 courses when I ranked it in July, and the overlap with the exam blueprints is large. My full ranking with role-based order is in the Anthropic Academy guide.
  • The official docs. The Developer and Architect blueprints track the Claude API, Agent SDK, Claude Code, and MCP documentation closely, down to items about CLAUDE.md hierarchies and settings.json.

Courses alone will not carry the two architect exams. Their blueprints test judgment calls from production work, like when retries cannot fix a failure or why a fresh review instance catches more bugs than the session that wrote the code. Six months of real building, which every guide recommends, is the actual prep.

Is a Claude certification worth it?

Depends almost entirely on where you sit relative to the partner ecosystem.

If you work at a consultancy or agency in the Claude Partner Network, yes, and quickly. Certifications count toward partner program standing, discounts lower the fee, and with more than 10,000 consultants already certified by June, the credential is becoming table stakes in that world rather than a differentiator. Early exams in a growing ecosystem also tend to be the cheapest and least competitive they will ever be.

If you are an individual developer outside the partner world, it is a maybe. The knowledge tested is real and the $125 fee is modest, but you have to route through a Partner Network application to register, the credential expires in 12 months, and hiring managers outside the Claude ecosystem do not know what CCAR-F is yet. If your clients or employer are betting on Claude, the math works. If not, the same six months of building that prepares you for the exam is worth more than the exam.

If you use Claude for everyday work and want something on paper, start free. The Academy completion certificates cost nothing and require no partner application. Move to the $99 Associate exam only when a proctored credential would change a real conversation with your employer. For the wider field of options, my free AI certifications ranking covers what Google, AWS, and Microsoft offer against this.

FAQ

How much does a Claude certification cost?

The official exam guides list $99 USD for Claude Certified Associate, Foundations, $125 USD for both the Developer and Architect Foundations exams, and $175 USD for Architect Professional. The fee applies to each attempt, and Anthropic says partner-tier discounts are applied at checkout.

Can anyone take a Claude certification exam?

Registration runs through the Anthropic Partner Academy, and Pearson VUE says certification is open to organizations in the Claude Partner Network. Anthropic's June 2026 update says getting started with the network is free at the Registered entry level, and that certifications belong to individual people, not firms.

Which Claude certification should I start with?

The Associate exam if you use Claude for everyday business work, the Developer exam if you build applications on the API and Agent SDK, and Architect Foundations if you design production systems with Claude Code, MCP, and agents. Architect Professional targets experienced architects and assumes production delivery experience.

How hard is the Claude Certified Architect exam?

Architect Foundations has 60 questions in 120 minutes with a passing score of 720 on a 100 to 1,000 scale. It is scenario based: each sitting presents 4 scenarios picked from a bank of 6, covering things like support agents, multi-agent research systems, and Claude Code in CI pipelines. Anthropic recommends 6 or more months of hands-on Claude experience.

How long is a Claude certification valid?

12 months from the date it is awarded. Renewing on time is free through a non-proctored assessment on the Anthropic Partner Academy. If the credential lapses, you retake the full exam at the full fee.

Is there a free Claude certification?

The proctored certification exams are paid. The free route is Anthropic Academy course completion certificates: the public catalog had 20 free courses when I last checked it, and those certificates prove completed official training rather than a passed proctored exam.

Do the Claude certification exams have prerequisites?

No. Every exam guide states there are no mandatory prerequisites or required courses, and that the credential is awarded on exam performance alone. The experience each guide lists, such as 1 to 5 years of software engineering for the Developer exam, is recommended rather than required.

Where do I register for a Claude certification exam?

On the Anthropic Partner Academy, which handles checkout and then hands you to Pearson VUE for scheduling. You can sit the exam online with a webcam proctor or at a Pearson VUE test center, and you can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before the appointment.
